Chief Frank Kokori, former General Secretary of NUPENG, known for his fiery stance in the labour movement, has died at 80. He passed away at 1:30 am today, December 7, 2023, on his birthday, succumbing to a month-long battle with kidney-related ailments.
His personal assistant, Atawada Barry Oke, is reported by The Punch to have confirmed the sad news, revealing that Kokori’s health deteriorated on Monday, rendering him unable to interact while on life support.

Kokori’s November distress call, citing neglect despite his contributions to democracy, sparked visits from dignitaries like Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege.
The octogenarian, born in Ovu, Delta State, played a pivotal role in the fight against military regimes and the June 12, 1993 pro-democracy movement. He endured four years of detention under General Sani Abacha and was released in 1998 after Abacha’s death. A member of the APC, he was appointed NSITF Chairman in 2017 but denied the position.
Chief Frank Kokori’s demise marks the end of an era in principled trade unionism and democratic activism.
