Chinese Couple Executed For Killing Toddlers

Zhang Bo and his girlfriend Ye Chengchen were executed in southwest China’s Chongqing after pushing two children off a 15th-floor balcony. The couple had been found guilty of causing the children’s fatal falls on November 2, 2020. Zhang Bo, the father of the two children, had an inappropriate relationship with Ye Chengchen without disclosing his marital or parental status.

Despite a custody agreement between Zhang and his former wife for their two-year-old daughter and one-year-old son, Ye perceived the children as obstacles to her future with Zhang. Together, they devised a plan to stage an accidental fall, resulting in the tragic deaths of their children. Their actions challenged legal and moral boundaries, leading to their execution.

Chen Meilin, the mother of the deceased children, expressed her grief and shock at the incident, saying: ‘The moment I heard my kids were actually thrown out of the 15th-floor by their father and the mistress, I couldn’t find any words to describe my feeling’.

Zhang’s ex-wife, Chen Meilin, revealed to local media that his new girlfriend, Ye Chengchen, did not want Zhang to have children of his own blood with another woman. Zhang started a relationship with Chengchen while he was still married to Meilin, and he divorced her later. Custody of the children was shared, so the daughter would remain with her mother and the son would remain with his father until he was six-years-old.

On the day of the incident, Zhang asked to look after his daughter after seeing his girlfriend cut her wrists during a live video chat. According to Chen, Zhang was on a video phone call with Ye when she slit her wrists. Zhang got scared, picked up the two children, and threw them from the balcony .

Zhang admitted to local media that he and Ye had plotted to kill the children so that they could start a new family without any children from his former marriage. The couple was sentenced to death in 2021 over the fatal falls in 2020 of two children from the 15th floor of a residential tower in southwest China’s Chongqing. They were executed by lethal injection.
