NEWS: 13yr Old Shoots 60yr Old Grandpa to Death In Colorado

A 13-year-old boy is accused of murdering a Colorado grandfather on a Denver bus according to the new York Times.
The incident occurred around 6:41 p.m. on January 27 during a dispute that erupted on a Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus in Denver.

Blocking The Aisle
The 60-year-old man, Richard Sanchez, was shot and killed after allegedly getting into an argument with the teenage suspect over his (grandfather’s ) “leg blocking the aisle”.
Tragically, Sanchez’s family claimed that they were not informed of his death until they went to the police to report him missing.
The senseless killing has left his grandson heartbroken, as he was not there with his grandfather during his last moments.
The 13-year-old suspect is now in police custody and is being held on investigation of first-degree murder.

My Musings on The Reckless And Callous Killing

1. Such incidents are deeply distressing and highlight the need for better conflict resolution and safety measures on public transportation systems. 🚌💔

2. It also tells of the weak gun control measures. That a 13 year old can have access to a gun is terrifying and explains why more people die from mass shootings than most other causes in America.

3. This despicable act also highlights the low level of respect for the elderly that we now see amongst the newer generations.

4. Communication inefficiency in the police department: no one from the police bordered to notify the family of Richard Sanchez’s death until they reported him missing. I thought this was only possible in Nigeria.

5. Generational Conflict: Potentially, a debate has arisen over generational changes in values and behaviour. How does a dispute over leg space lead to a tragedy of this proportion? The lack of respect for human life is obvious in this.

Conclusion

This is an unfortunate incident that raises serious question over the ease with which weapons of death are easily procured. The life of the teenager has been completely altered as he will most likely live the rest of his life in regret over what the Bible calls “the sins of youth” that was avoidable if there was more attention paid to inculcating the right moral values based on respect for human lives.
